Initiation of the infrastructural project for the construction of the railway line between the industrial zones of Burgas and Kırklareli, Tekirdağ

We consider the favourable geographical location of the District of Burgas with its coastal layout and its border with the Republic of Turkey, as an important competitive advantage and as a potential opportunity for economic, social, and territorial cohesion of the two neighbouring countries.

The implementation of the project is particularly significant for the promotion of the function of the port as an intermodal transport centre. The actual passenger turnover of the port of Burgas at present is far beneath its potential capacity, which is to a large extent due to the lack of adequate infrastructure combining different modes of transport. Reports show that the port of Burgas has the potential to handle the load traffic from the District of Kırklareli, which hosts industrial zones with metal processing factories, aluminium profile manufacturing plants, textile factories, etc.

In connection with that an agreement was signed on 9 April 2014 between the district governors of Burgas and Kırklareli for cooperation and for the expansion of the border control checkpoint, and development of the transport network in the region.

The agreements reached between the parties include joint efforts for the authorization of heavy duty vehicles traffic through the border control checkpoint at Malko Tarnovo - Dereköy, and for the opening of a new border control checkpoint at Rezovo – Ineada, and construction of a railway line from the port of Burgas to Kırklareli with a connection to Tekirdağ. The implementation of these plans will have serious positive effects for the economic cohesion in the Thracian region, with favourable influence on the different sectors of the economy.

We believe in the good intentions of all parties required for the implementation of this project.
